Wayanad District is in the north-east of Kerala. Wayanad was formed on 1 November 1980. Wayanad was the 12th district by carving out areas from Kozhikode and Kannur districts.

Kalpetta is the district headquarters of Wayanad. Kalpetta is the only municipal town in the district. The region was known as Mayakshetra in the earliest records. Mayakshetra turned into Mayanad and finally to Wayanad. The word Wayanad is a combination of paddy field and land. There are many indigenous tribals in Wayanad. Wayanad is the least populous district in Kerala.
